# Mappit

> Mappit (https://mappit.ai) is the world's zeitgeist on a map. Its own crawler reads the world's newsrooms around the clock, AI models watch the global picture, and every story is pinned to the place it's about on an interactive, time-aware map of 1,800+ places. Every place has a story.

Mappit's corpus is a living, sourced, dated record of local news and world events — geolocated to the city it's about, read straight from the publishers' own pages, weighted by each publisher's reliability (Wikipedia's reliable-sources consensus plus a preferred tier of the major US and UK wires, networks and papers of record), and corroborated across independent sources. Each day's stories are kept with their dates rather than replaced (dead links and duplicates are removed), so the map is a time machine: any past day can be replayed. A daily "this day in history" pulse adds historical events anchored to the places they happened.

The public entity pages below each serve crawlable metadata, schema.org JSON-LD, and a `<noscript>` summary for non-JS clients.

# Mappit User Guide

Mappit (https://mappit.ai) is the world's zeitgeist on a map. Around the clock, Marco — Mappit's own crawler — reads the world's newsrooms, from the big wires and papers of record down to each town's local paper, while AI models from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI watch the global picture and cross-check the news; every story is pinned to the place it's about on an interactive map. You can browse for free, subscribe to places and people, and (with Mappit Plus) plant your own pins.

## How Mappit works

Behind the map is a reader that never sleeps. Marco the crawler visits the front pages of thousands of publishers — the busiest newsrooms every half hour, each place's own local press through the day — reads each article the way you would, and **pins each story to the place it's actually about**, while AI models add the global picture and check stories against each other. The result is a living picture of what's happening on Earth *right now*: a glowing marker for every place with fresh news, sized by how much is going on and colored by its leading topic.

Six ideas make it more than a map of headlines:

- **It groups the news into storylines.** The **Threads** feed gathers related stories into trending events — "War in Iran", "Heat Waves" — so you can follow a story as it develops instead of scrolling past the same event ten times.
- **It's a time machine.** Mappit keeps every day's stories with their dates — a new day never replaces an old one — so the date filter can redraw the map as it looked on any past day. Scrub back to watch a story, a region, or a conflict unfold over time.
- **You can just ask.** Marco, Mappit's built-in AI guide, has read the entire map — every story, pin, location, and Thread. Ask a plain-language question ("what's happening in Lisbon?", "what's the latest on the Iran war?") and he answers with citations you can click to fly the map there. He knows the lay of the land too — a town's population, a state's neighbours, a country's GDP per capita — from open data, with the year and source of every figure.
- **It answers inside your AI assistant.** Add Mappit to Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code with one address, **https://mappit.ai/mcp**, and ask them what's happening anywhere — they answer from Mappit's map, with links to the publishers. Free, no account (see *Use Mappit in your AI assistant*).
- **It layers the real world on top.** Beyond the news, toggle live earthquakes, wildfires, air quality and weather, stock tickers plotted at company headquarters, a mood heatmap, national and state borders, and "on this day in history" plaques.
- **It paints the statistics too.** Seven **map apps** colour every country, US state, county or congressional district by a number (the economy, people, health, conflict and crisis, the 2026 US elections, Mappit's own news) and play the years like a film, with every figure's source (see *Map apps*).

And it's a *map*, properly: six basemaps to choose from (streets, night, satellite, hybrid, terrain, minimal), real elevation you can stand up in 3D, an optional globe, and a camera that arrives somewhere rather than teleporting — all of which you can turn down or off if you'd rather it held still.

Browsing all of this is free. A **Mappit Plus** subscription ($2/month) adds creation — your own pins, collections, routes, and dataset layers.

- **News you can trust.** Every publisher is weighed by its reputation — Wikipedia's reliable-sources consensus, plus a preferred tier of the major US and UK wires, networks and papers of record — and the reliable ones lead, while publishers rated unreliable never reach the map at all. Independent sources cross-check each other, every article link is validated on the way in, so dead or invented links are dropped before they reach you, and every publisher is checked against Google's Safe Browsing lists — a site flagged for malware or phishing never reaches the map.
- **Make it yours.** Plant pins on the places that matter to you, build shareable collections and drivable routes, put yourself on the map, and wake up to a Daily Digest of your places.

## Getting started

### Browsing the map

The map is the home page. Each glowing marker is a **location** with fresh stories; the number badge shows how many stories are live there. Hover a marker for a popover with the top stories (this week's best, or the best ever where the week is quiet); click it to open the **detail panel** on the right with the full location card — stories grouped by category, community posts, ratings, and a Subscribe button. Zoom out and nearby markers cluster together; the busiest places stay visible longest. On your first visit the map asks to use your location and centers there; if you decline, it opens on the United States.

On desktop, map popups now open after a **brief hover** — so a quick sweep of the mouse across the map won't flicker them open and shut — and pressing **Esc** closes an open popup.

At neighborhood zoom, pins start showing their **titles** beside the teardrop, so you can read what's around you without clicking. When labels would collide, some titles drop out — the pins themselves never do.

Selecting a pin or a location doesn't just jump the camera any more: the map **arrives tilted**, with a slow drift, so you land somewhere rather than being teleported. If your device asks for reduced motion, you get the instant flat jump instead — Mappit honors that setting throughout the map.

### Choosing how the map looks

The **map-style button** — on the left-hand control stack on desktop, on the right-hand stack on a phone — opens the basemap picker. Six ways to see the world:

- **Streets** — the warm daylight map. The everyday view.
- **Dusk** — the luminous night mode.
- **Satellite** — real aerial imagery.
- **Hybrid** — that imagery with Mappit's labels floated on top, so you can actually read it.
- **Terrain** — relief brought forward, with optional topographic contour lines.
- **Minimal** — grayscale "data ink": the basemap gets out of the way so pins, heat, and routes carry the picture.

By default the style follows the app's light/dark theme (Streets by day, Dusk by night). Pick one and it **pins** — the map stays that way on this device until you change it.

Two more buttons sit with it in the same stack:

- **3D terrain** (the mountain) — real elevation. Tilt the map (right-drag on desktop, two-finger drag on a phone) and mountains stand up. Buildings rise too, once you're zoomed into a street.
- **Globe view** (the globe) — swaps the flat map for the actual planet. Best zoomed out. It's a view you *choose*, not the default, because half a globe is always facing away from you. Click again for the flat map; your position is kept either way.

If your device is older or the graphics are modest, Mappit quietly leaves the heaviest of these off rather than making the map stutter.

### Share this view

The **camera button** — last in the same control stack — saves a picture of exactly what you're looking at: your camera angle, your layers, your pins, with the Mappit wordmark and map credits composited in. On a phone it opens the share sheet, so it goes straight to a message or a post; on desktop it downloads.

### The footer

On desktop the footer carries the site's pulse: how many stories are on the map (and how many arrived today), how many threads, how many places, and how many people visited in the last hour. The story, thread and place counts are links — the quickest way from the map to the Newsfeed, Threads and Locations pages.

### The date filter

The date range control at the top is a time machine. Pick any range and the map redraws as it looked then: stories, event pins, and activity from that window only. Mappit keeps every day's stories with their dates (only dead links and duplicates are removed), so you can scrub back to any day since a location joined the map.

**And it plays.** On a computer, the **Rewind button** (the little history clock in the map's control stack) replays the map **day by day** — news, pins, mood heat, and stocks all stepping together like frames of a film. It plays whatever range your date filter is set to, or the last 30 days if you haven't set one. While it runs, a chip at the bottom shows the current day and progress with pause and stop; Esc stops too, and stopping puts your date filter back exactly as you had it. Watch a hurricane cross the map, an election build, or your city's month go by in half a minute.

### The topic filter

Beside the date filter sits a **Topic** picker — the same eighteen colors as the legend (News & Politics, Crime & Public Safety, Sports, Weather & Environment, and so on). Pick one and the map shows only that kind of news: city markers count and color by it, the story strip trends within it, and a place's panel lists just its stories on that topic. **All topics** puts everything back. On desktop the **Topic colors** legend in the welcome panel does the same thing — click a swatch to filter, click it again (or *Show all*) to clear, and *Read in the Newsfeed* opens the river filtered the same way. The Layers panel's *News categories* chips are the multi-select version of the same filter, and the three always agree. The choice is remembered on your device.

### Searching

The search bar accepts topics, keywords, and place names. Use the dropdown for quick suggestions, or expand to the full-screen map overlay to search visually. Results include locations, stories, pins, posts, and collections. Category chips filter by the Mappit ontology (News & Politics, Food & Drink, Events & Nightlife, and more). Suggestions start at two letters, and a two-letter search is a whole word: "AI" finds AI stories, not every headline with "said" in it. Each place in the results has a **Newsfeed** button beside it, for every story from there.

You can also **search by date**. Type a date, a range, or a whole month right in the query — "manila 7/1/2026 to 7/14/2026", "protests 2026-07" — and Mappit narrows to stories from that window, then matches your other words within it.

And you can **search street addresses**. Type one ("742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield") and matches preview right in the suggestions as you pause — or press Enter / tap the Search key and pick from the full results (there's always a *"Search … as a street address"* option for anything the detector missed). Pick a match and the map flies there, dropping a marker with one-click actions: create a pin, get directions, or copy the address. You can also **right-click anywhere on the map** (long-press on mobile) to ask *what's here* — Mappit looks up the nearest address on the spot. Address lookups have a small daily allowance (higher for signed-in and Plus users).

## Accounts and roles

### Registering

Registration is free with email + password (a 6-digit code verifies your address) or one click with Google. Free registered users can post and reply on public pins, add likes/dislikes/ratings/comments, subscribe to up to 3 location feeds, follow other users, and chat with Marco (10 messages/day).

### Mappit Plus

Mappit Plus ($2/month) unlocks creation: drop your own pins on the map, organize them into collections, import datasets as map layers, draw measurement overlays, subscribe to up to 20 location feeds, get 200 Marco messages/day, and browse ad-free. Your public pins become discoverable in search by topic and keyword.

### Roles

Anonymous visitors can browse and search. Registered users add social actions. Moderators handle reported content. Curators can feature exceptional content — their pins are visible to everyone. Administrators run the site. Curator and Administrator accounts include **all Mappit Plus features** automatically, no subscription required.

## Pins

### Creating a pin (Plus)

Click the **Plant pin** button on the map (below Directions, top-left), then click the spot you want — the pin editor opens with the coordinates filled in. You can also use Pins ▸ New and enter coordinates by hand — or neither: type an address in the editor's Address field and hit **Find**, and the coordinates fill themselves (or **From map** to go the other way — the address fills from the planted spot). Pins have a kind — Place, Event, Service, Alert, Guide, Meetup, User, or Address — a markdown description, links, a cover image, a **photo gallery** (paste screenshots straight into the editor with Ctrl/⌘+V, or upload; galleries show as a swipeable carousel on the pin), **audio/video attachments** (YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple Podcasts render as inline players), and optional services, fees, and contact info. Pins start Private; publish them Public or share to a Workgroup — the visibility selector and a copy-link **Share** button sit at the top of every pin's panel. Your daily pin allowance depends on your plan (Plus 10, Pro 40, Max 100).

### Your user pin — put yourself on the map (free)

The **User** pin is different: it marks *you*. Every registered account — no subscription needed — gets exactly **one** user pin. The fastest way to drop it: hit **Find me** on the map and Mappit plants (or moves) your pin right where you are. Like every pin it starts **private** — publish it when you want to be findable, and moving it never changes its visibility. Once public, share its link and the preview card features your profile picture pinned to the place, and Marco can answer "where is @somename?" Keep an eye on **Marco's own pin**: our curators move him somewhere new and interesting every day.

**Follow Me.** Tap **Follow me** on the map and Mappit locates you, moves your pin, and opens its panel so you can pick how you're tracked. While Mappit is open your pin follows your live position; the map keeps you centered until you pan or zoom to look around, and a **Recenter** button (next to Marco) snaps back to you whenever you want. Choose your cadence in the panel:

- **By time** — your pin updates every 1, 5, 15, or 60 minutes, whenever you've actually moved. Best for a long drive.
- **Walking / Biking (by distance)** — drops a breadcrumb every **10, 20, or 40 metres** for a detailed trail. Phone GPS is good to about 10 metres, so "every 10 m" is the finest, most faithful track of a walk or ride.

With **route tracking** on (Plus), each breadcrumb becomes a small **Route** dot collected into an auto-created route collection — and the *entire route costs just one pin* from your daily allowance. Open that collection later and hit Compute route to turn your outing into a drawn, shareable path. A "Following — keep Mappit open" banner reminds you the screen needs to stay awake; tap its **✕** to tuck it away (Follow Me keeps running).

**Follow Me is a chase cam now.** While it's tracking you, the camera rides tilted and gently turns to face the direction you're moving — a walk or a drive reads like a chase shot, not a dot on graph paper. Your pin glides between GPS fixes instead of jumping, and your breadcrumb trail glows — brightest at your most recent step, fading toward where you started. Everything you already know still holds: drag or zoom and the camera is yours, **Recenter** hands it back, and when you stop following, the view settles flat. If your device asks for reduced motion, Follow Me stays the classic instant-jump view.

### Moving a pin

Drag it. Any pin you own can be picked up and dropped somewhere new — press and hold on mobile, then drag. An **Undo** toast appears for ten seconds after every move, so an accidental grab is one tap from repaired.

### Event pins

Event pins carry a date range, venue, ticket link, and price. While an event is active it pulses on the map, and it appears in the Home ▸ Events tab for anyone whose date filter covers it. Past events remain in the historical record.

### Who sees my public pins?

Public pins are always discoverable in search, on your profile, and in your public collections, and **anyone with the link can open a public pin** — share it on Facebook or anywhere and the general public can view it, no account needed. On the **map**, your public pins surface for people who follow you (and your workgroup members for workgroup pins). Curator and Administrator pins surface for everyone — that's the editorial layer. And sharing works as an invitation: when someone opens a link to one of your public pins, your user pin, **or your profile**, the map shows **your other public pins** for the rest of their session — a shared link becomes a doorway to your whole public map.

### Address pins

An **Address** pin saves a street address as a place — plant one on the map and the address fills itself, or type the address and let it place the pin. It's the building block for routes: collect address pins (a client list, a garage-sale circuit, your holiday-lights tour) and turn them into a drive.

### Collections

Collections group pins into shareable sets ("Best taco trucks of Austin"). Each public collection has its own page you can link anywhere, and renders as a toggleable map layer for your followers.

**Collections can drive.** On your collection's page, hit **Compute route** and Mappit plans the drive through every pin in order — total distance and time, viewable on the map as a route line. **Optimize order** finds the best visiting sequence (your first and last stops stay put). The route is saved with the collection, so everyone you share it with sees the drive, not just the list.

**And collections can fly.** View a route on the map and a **▶ Fly this route** button appears at the bottom: the camera swoops to the start and rides the whole route low and tilted, the line drawing itself just ahead of you — your taco tour or road trip as a flyover. Switch speed (1×/2×/4×) mid-flight; Esc, the Stop button, or simply grabbing the map ends it. Try it over the Satellite or Terrain basemap. (Reduced-motion devices get an instant framing of the route instead.)

## Trending: Global, National, Latest, Here & For You

The story carousel at the top of the map is the **trending strip** — the fastest way to see what's happening. Its header has a scope selector; click a tab to switch what "trending" means:

- **Global** (the default) — the hottest stories worldwide right now, ranked across every place Mappit tracks. This is where breaking world events lead, and where **Featured** stories (hand-picked by our curators, marked with a badge) are pinned to the front.
- **National** — trending within one country, by where each story happened. It starts on *your* country (the one you're browsing from) and shows its code on the tab; once it's selected, the tab becomes a picker of every country with a place on the map, and your pick is remembered on this device. Zooming the map out to a whole country and using Here never quite worked — the view always took in the neighbours — so this is how to ask "what's the news in the USA?"
- **Latest** — the newest-crawled headlines worldwide in chronological order, most recent first. This one skips the trending weighting entirely and just shows what *just came in* — use it to watch the feed fill up in real time.
- **Here** — trends only the part of the world you're currently looking at. Pan or zoom the map and the strip re-ranks to follow your viewport — zoom into Texas and you get Texas trending; zoom out to a continent and it widens with you. Use it to answer "what's going on *around here*?"
- **For You** — the top stories from the locations you've subscribed to, freshest first. This tab appears once you have at least one subscription; until then the selector shows Global, National, Latest, and Here only.

**What Global and National are for.** Global is the world's news: World & Conflict and News & Politics lead, business, science and weather count, and the local-life topics — school sports, real-estate listings, events — stay off it. National is a country's news, with the pro leagues allowed in. Both rank with corroboration (a story several sources agree on outranks one source's), recency, and a breaking-news boost. At the end of every strip an **All … stories** card opens that tab as a newsfeed, newest first — every Global story, every story in your country, every story in the map view you were looking at, or every story from the places you subscribe to.

**Your language.** Global, National, Latest and Here show stories in your language — the one on your profile, else your browser's, else the language of the country you're browsing from; when fewer than ten remain, the best of the rest top the strip up. On a desktop the **Your language / All languages** toggle beside the tabs switches the filter off and is remembered on this device; on a phone the strip simply follows your language. The Newsfeed follows the same rule, and a place's panel adds the place's own languages (see *Every place has its own newsfeed too*). Every headline on the strip carries a picture. A story whose language can't be determined isn't kept at all.

**Hiding the strip and the zeitgeist panel.** On a desktop the film-strip button beside the date picker hides and shows the story strip, as on the phone. The **Explore the zeitgeist** panel on the right has an **✕**; once closed, the compass button in the filter bar (or the link in the empty panel) brings it back. Both are remembered on this device.

Every card shows the story's source, publish time, mood dot, and its place — click the place name to fly the map there, or the headline to read the original article. Many cards also show a **preview image** pulled from the article itself; on phones the image is hidden to keep the strip compact. Trending always leads with the freshest news: breaking events surface immediately and rankings favor recent publication, so the strip you see in the morning is about *today*.

## Threads

The map answers *where* the news is; the Newsfeed answers *what just happened*. **Threads** answers *what's the ongoing story* — it groups related stories into trending **storylines** you can follow as they develop. Instead of scrolling past ten separate headlines about the same event, you get one Thread — **"War in Iran"**, **"Heat Waves"**, **"France and Spain Wildfires"** — that gathers them all.

The ten top-ranked threads carry a fresh **Analysis** every day, written automatically; a curator's own edit of an analysis is kept. Thread cards lead with stories in the platform's language (English) — a storyline crawled in eight languages shows what most readers can read first, the rest behind — and the Daily Digest and weekly Analysis do the same. Threads are ranked the way the Global strip is: how much fresh, corroborated news a storyline has gathered, weighted by what the Global strip cares about — so a summit outranks a burst of youth-soccer results however fresh, and a storyline in a topic Global leaves out sits at the bottom rather than vanishing. A **Topic** picker beside the date filter narrows the page to one category (its subtopics included).

**View on map** on a thread draws the storyline's arcs across the map and puts the thread in the right-hand panel — its stories, a share link, and a ✕ that clears the arcs. Open **Threads** from the left nav (just under Newsfeed). Each card shows a short **title**, a one-line summary, a **photo montage** of pictures from the stories inside it, how many stories it covers, its main topic and its location. Tap a Thread to open the full storyline — every story in it, newest first — and see how the event unfolded.

Threads build themselves: as new stories arrive, Mappit works out which ongoing event each one belongs to and adds it to the right Thread (or starts a new one when something genuinely new happens), so a story that runs for days stays a single, growing Thread rather than scattering into dozens of separate cards.

A few things you can do with a Thread:

- **See its geography** — hit **View on map** and the map draws glowing arcs from the storyline's home city out to every other city its stories touch. A wildfire thread spanning France and Spain, or a conflict thread reaching four capitals, becomes a shape you can read in one look.
- **Search a storyline by name** — type *"War in Iran"* into search and jump straight to the Thread.
- **Ask Marco** — *"what's the latest on the Iran war?"* and he answers from the Thread and links you to it.
- **Filter by date** — the same All time / 24h / 7 days / 30 days / custom-range control the Newsfeed has.
- **Share one** — a shared Thread link previews on social media as a news card with its photo montage.

## Newsfeed

Sometimes you just want to *read the news*, not navigate it. The **Newsfeed** — a page in the left nav (just under Home) — is an endless, newest-first river of every story on the map. Open it and the freshest story sits at the top; scroll and older stories load automatically, flowing into columns as you go, all the way back to the "birthday" stories (the very first batch we pinned at launch) — then it ends. A **date filter** at the top narrows it to any window you like (last 24 hours, a week, a month, or a custom range).

Cards show a **picture** whenever the article has one, so the feed reads like a magazine. Each card still carries its place: click a story's **location** to jump straight to it on the map and pick up browsing from there. It's the fastest way to catch up chronologically instead of place by place — a plain, keep-scrolling read of everything that's happening.

**Where a story came from.** The small mark at the bottom-right of every card says who put the story on the map: the logo of the AI vendor whose search surfaced it (Claude, Gemini, Grok, OpenAI) or **Marco's compass** — Marco the crawler, Mappit's own reader, which walks the front pages of the publishers already on the map and reads each story straight off the article page (no AI search involved — a small model call only files it under its topic). A **Source** picker beside the date filter narrows the river to one origin — pick *Marco* to see only crawled stories — and a **Topic** picker beside it narrows it to one kind of news (the map's topic filter opens the river with the same choice). The ×N badge next to the mark counts how many independent sources found the same story; a story Marco crawled that a vendor also found (or the other way round) is corroborated just like any two vendors agreeing.

**Every place has its own newsfeed too.** A location's side panel shows its most recent ~50 stories — but a city like Seattle may hold hundreds more. Click the **story count** at the top of any location's panel ("650 stories — see all") or the **All stories** button at the bottom of its list, and you get the full Newsfeed experience scoped to that one place: every story ever pinned there, newest first, with the same infinite scroll and **date filter** — scrub back and read what happened in that city any week since Mappit began. A place's panel and its newsfeed show your language and the place's own — Barcelona reads in Spanish, Catalan and English, Kochi in Malayalam and English, Washington in English — and the rest wait behind **N more in other languages** at the top of the panel (on the Newsfeed, the **All languages** toggle); with the strip's *All languages* on, everything shows. A "Worldwide newsfeed" link takes you back to the global river.

## Feeds and subscriptions

### The Locations directory

**Locations** in the left nav lists every place on the map. Click any column header to sort by it — click again to flip — including two that tell you how alive a place is: **Latest story** (the age of its newest story, green within a day, amber within a week) and **Last crawled** (when the feed engine last swept it). Curators and administrators get a **Play** button at the right of each row that crawls just that place right away; it becomes **Cancel** while the crawl is queued or running, and the row expands to show the run as it happens — each source's stories, cost and timing — then the finished run's summary. Under it, **Publishers** lists Marco's press corps for the place — the publishers on the crawler's roster whose home it is — and **Find publishers** asks Bing News who covers the place right now and puts those publishers on the roster. When Bing finds nobody for the place, it asks Gemini once which newsrooms cover it (about two cents, within the discovery pass's daily cap, and at most once a month a place) and keeps the ones whose front pages list their own stories. The table then shows who found each publisher and what became of it: added, now home, already on the roster, home elsewhere, national, avoided, or — for a Gemini suggestion whose front page failed the check — not verified, and why.

### Location feeds

Subscribe to any location and its top stories fill your **For You** carousel at the top of the home page. Your places stay fresh on their own: every hour the crawler's location lane reads the places that are short of news through their own newsrooms, the neediest first. Subscription caps by plan: Free 3, Plus 20, Pro 50, Max 100.

**How stories are gathered.** Most stories come from Marco the crawler, which reads publishers' own pages (see *The crawler* below); AI models add the global pulse every few hours (Google's Gemini and OpenAI's, joined since 2.7.0 by Anthropic's Claude and xAI's Grok) and the day in history (Gemini and OpenAI), so no single source shapes the feed. Publishers rated unreliable or deprecated, or avoided by a curator, are refused (since 2.7.0), so their stories never reach the map. Story timestamps reflect when a story *entered Mappit's feed* (its crawl time), which is why the Latest tab reads as a clean, most-recent-first stream. And every story's URL is validated on the way in — dead links are quietly dropped, so what you click through to is real. A story an AI model found must also have a picture to be kept.

### The Daily Digest

Opt in to the **Daily subscription digest** on your Profile page and every morning Mappit emails you the **Daily Digest** — a short editorial brief of the day's biggest stories on the map, written fresh each day, plus the latest headlines from your subscribed places. Every issue links back to the live map, and one click of the Unsubscribe link in any issue turns it off. Marco reads the digest too, so you can always ask him "what's trending today?"

### Following people

Follow a user and their public pins, events, and overlays appear on your map as a "Following" layer and in your For You feed. Organize follows into named groups and toggle each group as its own layer.

## Map tools

### Dataset layers (Plus)

Tools ▸ Import Dataset accepts a CSV with latitude/longitude columns (or an address column we geocode). Each row becomes a record-pin on its own toggleable layer; clicking one shows the record's fields as a card. Layers can be private or public.

### Draw & measure (Plus)

The draw tools add polygons, lines, and circles to the map. Mappit computes distances and areas instantly, and you can name, color, and annotate shapes, or group pins inside a shape into a named cluster.

### Directions

Set either end however you like — **type a street address** and pick from the matches, click the map, or hit **Directions to** on any pin, location, or address result — and Mappit draws the driving route with distance, time, and turn-by-turn steps. Once the route is drawn, **▶ Fly this route** appears — the same camera flyover collections get, riding your directions from A to B.

### History overlay

The **Today in History** layer (on by default) drops bronze year-plaques over the cities where history happened on today's calendar date — battles, treaties, discoveries, births and deaths of era-defining figures — gathered daily by an AI model with live web search, and placed only when the event's location is clear. Rewind the date filter and the anniversaries follow, and you can toggle it off under Layers. Search also understands dates: try "7/14/2026 jakarta".

### Stocks & ticker

Layers ▸ **Visitors this hour** (on by default) drops a tiny red dot wherever someone is looking at the map from right now — bigger where several people are looking from the same city. Hover one for the count and the city. It's city-level and anonymous: the dot is on Denver, never on a house, and nothing about who is looking is shown or stored beyond that. The visitor count in the desktop footer switches the layer on.

Layers ▸ **Stocks** plots the day's quotes at each company's HQ city, and **Ticker tape** runs a crawl along the bottom. Coverage starts with the S&P 500 and now spans multiple exchanges — including the **London Stock Exchange** (FTSE) — each on its own trading calendar, so companies light up green and red at their real headquarters worldwide. Hover (or tap) to pause the tape; click a symbol while paused to fly the map to that company's headquarters.

### Live feeds

Under Layers ▸ **Live feeds**, toggle real-time views of the planet, refreshed automatically:

- **Earthquakes** — recent quakes from USGS; bigger circles are stronger, and color shows depth.
- **Wildfires** — active fire hotspots detected by NASA satellites.
- **Air quality** — current US AQI at major cities, green (good) through maroon (hazardous).
- **Weather** — current temperature and conditions, cool blue to warm red.

Hover or tap any point for the details (magnitude, AQI, temperature, and so on). These layers show the world as it is right now, alongside the news.

**They move, too.** Earthquakes pulse at a rate matched to their magnitude — a M6 visibly outpaces a M2, so you can read severity across a region without checking a single number. Wildfires shimmer, air-quality points sit in a soft haze, and weather points grow a condition glyph (sun, cloud, rain, snow) once you're zoomed into a city. Reduced-motion devices get all of it held still.

### Sentiment heatmap

Layers ▸ **Sentiment heatmap** paints each place's mood as a soft bloom of color — red where the news is tense, green where it's upbeat — sized by how much is happening there. Turn it on to read the emotional temperature of a whole region at a glance.

The chips under it switch the heat between two questions:

- **Mood** — how the news *feels*, tense to upbeat. The default.
- **Activity** — where the world is *loud*: the same bloom, weighted by sheer volume of stories and discussion rather than sentiment. Use it to find where things are happening at all, regardless of tone.

### Media streams

Layers ▸ **Media streams** pins live news **radio and TV** right on the map — turn it on and news broadcasts appear where they're based. The layer is **off by default**, and it has two sub-toggles, **Video** and **Radio**, so you can show just one or both. (Radio is drawn from public internet-radio directories; TV from public 24/7 news livestreams.)

Click a media pin and press **Play**. A player opens in the **bottom-right corner** and — this is the good part — it **keeps playing as you roam the whole site**: pan the map, open pins, read the Newsfeed, chat with Marco, the sound (or video) follows you.

- **Radio** plays with a live **frequency analyzer** dancing along to the audio; hide it any time with its ✕ if you'd rather just listen.
- **TV** plays a live video embed right in the player. The TV pins are 24/7 news channels, from local stations in US and Canadian cities to national channels around the world; a pin says when its broadcast isn't in English. Every half hour Mappit checks what each channel is broadcasting and plays that, and a channel that goes off the air leaves the map until it's back.

Two buttons ride along with the player: the **✕** closes it, and the **pin button** flies the map back to the source's spot. 

**Plant your own (Plus).** Media pins are Marco's and are public, but Plus members can add their own: **Plant a pin**, choose the kind **Media stream**, paste a **stream URL**, and pick **Radio** or **Video**. It drops onto the map like any media pin, ready to play.

### Borders

Layers ▸ Geography ▸ **Borders** draws country and state lines boldly on the map, under the place names, styled to suit each map style — satellite and the globe included. The layer is **on by default** (untick Borders to hide it, and it stays off), and it has two sub-toggles, **National** and **State / province**, so you can show just one or both; with State / province alone, country borders are drawn as state lines so no state is left open at the frontier. Contested borders and claim lines (Kashmir, Aksai Chin, the Essequibo, Crimea and the like) are drawn **dashed** wherever the map data marks them, whichever level is on. State lines start at continent zoom for the largest countries (the US, Canada, Brazil, India…), and most countries' states, provinces and regions appear by the time you zoom in on a single country. A few gaps are in the map data itself: Ireland has no state-level lines, Portugal's regions show for only one zoom step and are gone when you zoom in further, and for that same step France also shows its pre-2016 region borders. (The lines come from the map's own OpenStreetMap and Natural Earth data; see *Data sources*.) The layer draws the lines; for how long a border is or which states a state touches, ask Marco (see *Marco knows his geography*).

### Sharing

Copy any Mappit link — a location, pin, collection, profile, or post — and it unfurls with a rich preview card (title, stats, image) in chat apps and social media. A pin with a photo gallery composites up to four of its images into the card. Only Public content gets a preview; private pins share as a generic card.

## Map apps

Map apps paint statistics onto the map: every country, US state, US county or congressional district coloured by a number, with the years (or months, or weeks) ready to play like a film. Each app is a set of **views** over one subject, and the data comes from official open sources, each credited in the app and under *Data sources*. Map apps arrived in Mappit 2.9.0.

### Opening a map app

Open **Layers ▸ Apps** and pick an app, or go straight to an address like **mappit.ai/apps/us-economy** (any view, level, period and place can be in the link, so a shared link opens exactly what you saw). One app is open at a time and it switches on the layers that suit it; close it and your own layers come back. The **app panel** (a bottom sheet on a phone) lets you:

- **switch views** with the tabs, or the ◀ ▶ arrows (auto-cycle turns them for you);
- **change the level** — countries, states, counties or districts, where the view has them;
- **play** the periods with the slider and ▶ (1×, 2×, 4×);
- **rank** the regions (highest and lowest five, the biggest movers) and **click a region** for its card and its line over time;
- **ask the map** in plain English, or **ask Marco** about what you are looking at.

Hover a region for its value, period and rank. Plain grey means no data; *preliminary*, *provisional*, *estimated* and *AI-gathered* values are labelled, and a value carried from an earlier period says so ("latest: 2023"). A view whose data has not arrived yet is not offered.

### The map apps

- **World Economy** — GDP per person, growth, inflation, unemployment, inequality, extreme poverty, youth unemployment, money sent home (remittances), government debt, currencies, interest rates and stock markets, country by country since 1990.
- **People** — population, density, growth, births per woman, life expectancy, people aged 65 and over, urban share and migration; US states and counties too.
- **US Economy** — unemployment (states since 1976, counties since 1990), jobless claims, income per person, cost of living, home prices, poverty and household income.
- **Health** — COVID, flu and RSV hospital admissions, overdose deaths, measles, the uninsured, life expectancy, child mortality, doctors, measles vaccination, health spending and disease outbreaks.
- **Conflict & Crisis** — conflict events as replayable dots sized by deaths (the last twelve months; events placed only to a whole country count in the deaths fill instead), conflict deaths per person since 1989, refugees, the internally displaced, US disaster declarations and drought.
- **US Elections** — the 2026 Senate and governor races (poll averages, money), Senate, governor and House results on election night once verified, and fifty years of presidential and Senate margins (and the 2024 House) to replay. Race cards list each party's likely nominee: the candidate on the state's November ballot where its results site publishes one, else a hand-checked Senate nominee, else the one named in the latest general-election poll, else the party's top fundraiser (leaving out members running for another office or no longer in Congress).
- **News Atlas** — Mappit's own reading of the world: how many stories each place makes, their mood and their topics, counted in Mappit's corpus.

Election results views use party colours (blue Democratic, red Republican); every other view uses neutral colour scales.

### Ask the map

Type a question into the app panel's **Ask the map** box — *"where is unemployment highest?"*, *"show me poverty by county in Texas"*, *"how did Pennsylvania vote in 2020?"* — and the map switches to the view that answers it, with a one-line answer worked out from the data (*"Highest: Nevada 5.8% (Aug 2026)"*). A small model only picks the view; Mappit checks the app, view, level, period and places itself and computes the answer, so it never invents a number. When the daily allowance for asking is used up, simple questions that name a measure or a place still work.

### Show on map — Marco's map button

Ask Marco a statistics question — *"which states have the highest overdose death rates?"*, *"what's the unemployment rate in Ohio?"*, *"who won Arizona in 2024?"*, *"how many conflict events were there in Sudan last month?"* — and he answers with the figure, its period and its source, and adds a **Show on map** button under the answer. Press it to open the matching app view, flown to or highlighting the places he talked about. The button is built from the data Marco actually read, so it always opens a real view.

### Map apps data and licences

Every number carries its source, period and licence, shown in the legend, the app panel's *Sources* block and Marco's answers. Map apps use only sources that allow reuse by a commercial site — the World Bank, US federal statistics agencies (BLS, BEA, Census, CDC, FEMA, FEC), FHFA, the ECB and central banks via Frankfurter, BIS, OECD, UCDP, UNHCR, the US Drought Monitor, VoteHub and the MIT Election Data and Science Lab; the full credits are under *Data sources*. Outbreak reports link to the World Health Organization's own pages and are summarised in Mappit's words. AI-gathered figures come only from official pages Mappit fetches itself, are checked against the page before use, and say "AI-gathered" wherever they appear. News measures count Mappit's own stories, not the world's news; mood is the tone of the coverage, not how happy people are.

## Games

The news is the playing field. Mappit has three games built entirely from the day's real stories — every clue, quiz question, and territory traces back to something that actually happened, and every reveal links to the storyline behind it. Play, and you'll know what happened today without ever opening a feed. Open **Games** from the left nav (the gamepad icon). Playing requires a free account; browsing the games pages doesn't. All game clocks run on **Pacific Time** — the game day ends at midnight PT, so no US player's day ends before their own midnight.

### Where's Marco — the daily treasure hunt

Every morning, five riddles written fresh from the day's news lead you city to city across the map — and the trail ends at Marco himself, whose actual pin moves to the day's final location. **How to play:** open Games and hit **Play on the map** (or look for the hunt flag on the map — zoom in to at least city level to find clues). The first riddle stays hidden until you press Start, so the clock is always running while you read. Read the riddle, work out which city it points to, fly there, and zoom in to claim the find. The flag takes a few seconds to settle after each find (it shows a small countdown) — click it once it turns red. Each solved clue reveals the real story it was written from, with a link to the storyline. Five clues, then Marco.

**Scoring:** 100 points per find, a 500-point bonus for finishing, and a speed bonus of up to 300 points that shrinks by 2 points per minute — fastest hunters get the most. **Hints** cost 50 points each: the first reveals the clue's country; the second adds a one-line description of the place and rings a 30 km area on the map — the map flies there, and the hunt card keeps a "show the ring" link if you wander off. A new hunt publishes early every morning (2:30 AM PT); yesterday's hunt closes at midnight PT and reveals its full trail.

### Bullshit — spot the fake

Four real news summaries. Three are real. One has exactly **one fact quietly bent** — an actor swapped, a number changed, a place moved, or an outcome inverted. You have **60 seconds** from the moment you flip the cards — enough to read all four properly, not enough to look anything up. The only winning strategy is actually following the news.

**How to play:** open Games → **Bullshit**. A new round unlocks every morning **together with the Daily Digest** (8 AM PT), Saturday through Friday — seven rounds a week: read the brief, then spot the fake. Miss a day and you can play it later; the clock only starts when you choose to view a round. **Sunday's round is special**: it plays against history — real historical events instead of this week's news. **Scoring:** a correct call earns 250 points plus up to 750 more the faster you answer (the bonus scales with seconds left on the 60-second clock). **The clock is real**: answer after the 60 seconds run out and even a correct call scores zero — you still see the reveal, but it earns nothing and doesn't count toward the streak. Call all seven rounds in a week correctly **within the clock** and a **+1,000 streak bonus** lands on top. After you answer, the reveal shows exactly what was changed — "Bolsonaro → Haddad" — and links the real storyline.

### Conquest — the weekly strategy game

The week's most-covered news cities become a Risk-style board: each city is a **province**, its borders drawn around it, and **the news is the weather** — provinces whose storylines are trending pay better. 2–5 players per match.

**Starting a match:** open Games → **Enter the war room**. Create a table (2–5 players) and share its 6-letter code, or join an open table — and there is always at least one: **Marco's table**, a standing public table anyone can join with one click (Marco hosts but never plays). Any general seated there can start the war once two or more are in (it also starts on its own when full), and a fresh one opens behind it. A **weekly** match runs until Friday night's scoring; an **Epic** match keeps the same daily rhythm but runs **1–4 weeks from launch** — a month-long war lives through a month of changing daily event cards, which makes its dispatches a running saga. A **blitz** match ignores the calendar entirely and runs a chosen length — 7, 15, or 30 turns, or no limit — a whole campaign in one sitting. Total conquest ends any match early, and you can play in as many matches as you like.

**The rhythm:** each turn you submit up to **5 orders**, and submitting **locks them** — no changes, and the table sees your checkmark. The moment every living player has locked orders, the turn resolves — all orders simultaneously. An eager table plays many turns a day. A one-week match has **no midnight cutoff**: each turn waits at most **24 hours** from when it opened, then rolls without anyone who hasn't reported — they simply sit that turn out — so one absent player never freezes the war, and nobody is rolled over at midnight while they sleep. The match page shows when the current turn's cut-off falls. A turn still waiting at Friday's final never rolls; the war is scored as the map stands. An **epic** has no clock: its turn rolls only when every living general is in, so a table spread across time zones plays every turn together. An absent general holds an epic until they report or resign (or the general who opened the war calls it off), and when its weeks are up the war is scored as the map stands; a turn still waiting on someone never rolls. There's a "pass this turn" option when you have nothing to do. Dice are **provably fair**: each turn's random seed is committed as a hash before you order and revealed after, so every roll can be checked.

**Your start:** a capital province (4 soldiers, 1 diplomat, 1 spy) plus two adjacent provinces, 100 money and 40 energy. Starts are dealt fairly: capitals sit at least three borders apart, each with a similar share of the board around it and neutral land to take. Lose all your provinces and you're eliminated.

**The eight orders:**
- **move** — shift soldiers between two adjacent provinces you own. One soldier always stays behind as garrison. **Only soldiers move.** A diplomat, spy, politician, scientist or hacker stays in the province where it was recruited for the rest of the match, so build each one where you need it to work.
- **attack** — send soldiers at an adjacent enemy or neutral province, or, from a province with a plane, at one up to two borders out. Attacking across a sea lane requires a ship (or that plane: it flies). The assault rolls round after round until your column is spent or the last defender falls, and then every survivor marches in.
- **influence** — a diplomat in one of your provinces bordering the target pushes it, one push per diplomat per turn; neutral provinces flip to you at 2 influence — a bloodless conquest over two turns (or one, under a diplomacy event card).
- **spy** — sabotage an enemy or neutral province: that turn every attack staged from it rolls −1 on its top die, and its defenders roll −1 when attacked. One sabotage per spy per turn, from anywhere in your empire. Use it offensively (mark the province you are about to attack) or defensively (mark the province they will strike from); you cannot sabotage your own province.
- **cyber** — pick a rival **general**, not a province. It takes two, like two diplomatic pushes (one, under a cyber event card): your first cyberattack on a general probes their network, and the next one on the same general breaches it — before anything else resolves, one of their orders for that turn is wiped at random and never happens. It needs a hacker anywhere in your empire, you get one cyberattack per turn, and it never wipes their own cyberattack. The ledger says when a general is being probed and which order was lost; if a breach finds no other orders to wipe, the foothold holds and the next cyberattack breaches.
- **build** — recruit units in a province you own: up to five soldiers, diplomats or spies in one order. Politicians, scientists and hackers come one at a time, one per province.
- **buy** — buy one asset in a province you own.
- **politick** — a politician you own in that province multiplies its yield ×1.5 that turn.

**Units (cost in money/energy):** Soldier 5/2 — fights, the only unit that moves and holds ground, cheap so you can mass them (the starting kit buys twenty). Diplomat 40/5 — one influence push per turn, on a neutral province bordering where it sits. It cannot be moved, so recruit it on the frontier you mean to push; buy more to push more. Spy 50/10 — one sabotage per turn, anywhere. Politician 40/5 — enables politick in its own province (one politick per province per turn, and one politician per province — a second adds nothing). Scientist 60/20 — unlocks planes, satellites and rockets anywhere in your empire; one per province, since one is all you need. Hacker 60/20 — enables the cyber order from anywhere in your empire; one cyberattack per turn however many hackers you keep, so one per province, and a second elsewhere is only insurance against losing the province the first sits in.

**Assets:** Drone 10/5 (+1 to your top attack die, consumed — half the price of a tank's permanent +1, because a drone is spent). Tank 40/20 (+1 attack die, permanent). Ship 50/20 (attack across sea lanes). Plane 75/40 (attacks from its province reach two borders out, over land or sea — it flies, so no ship needed; needs a scientist). Satellite 85/45 (+1 to the defender's top die where it sits; needs a scientist). Rocket 100/50 (destroys the defender's **most valuable** asset before the dice — priority by cost, so their rocket or satellite dies before a cheap drone; holds its fire and is not consumed if the defender has no assets; needs a scientist).

**Permanent assets don't stack.** One tank, ship, plane, or satellite per province is all you need — a second adds nothing, and the game won't sell you a duplicate in a province that already has one. Only drones and rockets are worth stockpiling, because they're consumed.

**Rockets and drones fire one per attack order, not all at once.** A province holding three rockets doesn't volley them in a single attack — each attack order staged from that province leads with exactly one rocket (and consumes exactly one drone for its +1). To spend a stockpile in one turn, issue multiple attack orders: three rockets feeding three attacks — at one province or several — is a first-strike barrage that can strip up to three defender assets before any dice are rolled.

**Combat:** Risk-style dice. The attacker rolls up to 3 six-sided dice (one per soldier still standing, one must stay home), the defender up to 2. Top die against top die, second against second — higher kills a soldier, **ties favor the defender**. Modifiers (tanks, drones, satellites, sabotage, event cards) adjust the top die for the whole assault, and the battle ledger writes the arithmetic out ("6+2=8"). An assault **rolls round after round until it is decided**: either every soldier you committed is lost, or the last defender falls and **every survivor marches in** — the number you commit is the size of the occupying force minus losses, and a big column can grind through a garrison in one night where a small one would break. The ledger shows each round compactly ("r1 6+1=7,4 vs 5,3 → att −1 def −1") and then the result.

**The order of a turn:** the ledger under each dispatch is laid out in the fixed phases the resolver runs — world events, cross-game rewards, local events, cyber, politics & sabotage, income, influence, build & buy, moves, attacks, outcome — with each header saying why it comes where it does (income lands before builds so today's pay can fund them; influence resolves before attacks so a province that flips is never fought over that night). Within a phase the seat holding the initiative acts first, and the initiative rotates one seat around the table every turn (the ledger names who leads), so nobody keeps first strike for the whole match.

**New to the game?** Games → Conquest → **Take the walkthrough** plays a four-turn practice match with every order, unit, asset and dice roll explained, before you sit at a real table.

**Ask Marco about your table.** Open Marco from a match page and he has that table's brief — who holds what, treasuries, the neutral frontier and the latest dispatch — alongside the rules, so you can ask "how am I doing?", "what happened last turn?" or "what should I do next?" and get an answer about your game. He never sees unsubmitted orders.

**The economy:** every province you own pays its base money and energy each turn, multiplied by its storyline's heat today — trending news pays up to ×2. Three daily **event cards**, drawn from real stories, shift the whole world for that day: yield multipliers, attack or defense bonuses, doubled diplomacy, or — when a real cyberattack or an AI breaking out of its sandbox is in the day's news — doubled cyberattacks, so a single one breaches a general. The cards are the *day's* weather — every turn played that day shares them.

**Local events** strike individual provinces, drawn from that city's own news each day: a wildfire cuts energy output, civil unrest costs the garrison a soldier, relief convoys add one, fortification news boosts defenders, a storm destroys an asset. A local event applies **only to its province, whoever holds it** — and it follows the real news: when the wildfire ends or a truce is signed, the effect simply stops appearing the next day. Dice and income effects last all day; unit and asset changes happen once per day. Every local event appears in the turn ledger with its story and its exact game effect. Unrest can take a province's **last** soldier: the province stays yours and keeps paying its income, but it stands **empty** — any attack takes it without a fight — until you move soldiers back in. The ledger says so when it happens, and the board marks an empty holding with a hollow 0.

**Leaving a game:** you can leave a waiting table any time (an emptied table closes; Marco's stays open). The general who opened the war can **cancel** it outright — **Close table** before it starts, **Cancel war** once it is live — and it ends for everyone with no winner and no scores, so nobody has to make everyone resign. In a live war, **Resign** eliminates you — your provinces turn neutral with garrisons standing, and if one general remains they win outright. A waiting table stays open until it fills, when the war starts on its own, or until any general seated there presses **Start the war now** with two or more in. The empty seats then close and nobody else can join.

**Who has reported:** the moment a general locks in orders, the table talk says so and names who is still being waited on, and the orders card tells you when you are the last one — lock in yours and the dice roll at once. **Table talk:** every match has its own chat room, beside the board on desktop and under the **Table talk** tab on a phone. Seated generals post; anyone can read. Type **@** to call out a general at the table (they're offered first; the mention notifies them and links to the match). Marco keeps the room honest with a line at every checkpoint — who took a seat, the moment the war begins, each turn's standings and the captures worth arguing about, resignations, and the final scores. The talk is part of the match record: it stays with the dispatches forever.

**Playing the other games pays in Conquest:** find 3+ of Marco's clues today and earn +20 money; find Marco himself and a volunteer soldier joins your capital; call today's Bullshit fake and earn +10 energy.

**Winning:** eliminate everyone for total conquest, or hold the most **victory points** at the final scoring: 2 per province, 5 per enemy capital you hold, plus (money + energy) ÷ 20. After each turn, a war-correspondent **dispatch** narrates what happened, with the full mechanical ledger (every roll, capture, and fizzled order) underneath — and a **replay slider** above the board lets you walk the whole match back and forth turn by turn.

### Leaderboards and history

Every game page has **Daily / Season / All-Time** leaderboards. Past editions are browsable — a finished hunt reveals its full trail and the stories behind it; past Bullshit weeks show every round's answer. And if a rule ever puzzles you mid-game, the Conquest pages carry a full **How to play** rulebook — or just ask Marco.

### Conquest — a general's playbook

This is how Marco coaches a table, and how to think about one yourself. None of it is a rule; all of it follows from the rules above.

1. **Read the table before anything else.** Who sits where, each treasury, which of your provinces border an enemy stack, which neutrals border a province of yours, and who holds the initiative this turn (the ledger names the lead seat). Most bad turns come from ordering before looking.
2. **Economy is tempo.** Every province pays 8–14 money and 4–8 energy a turn, more where its news is hot, and a politician there adds ×1.5. Money binds soldiers (5 money / 2 energy each) and energy binds tech. A province taken on turn 2 pays for the rest of the match, so expand early and arm later. Treasury left unspent is tempo thrown away — but keep 5–10 money back for an emergency garrison.
3. **Neutrals are cheaper than wars.** Influence flips a neutral in two pushes with no losses. A diplomat pushes once a turn and only a neutral bordering the province it sits in, so two neutrals off one province need two diplomats there. A diplomat cannot be moved — if none of your diplomats borders the province you want, the answer is to recruit another one where it does, never to march one over. Attack a neutral only when its garrison is one or two soldiers and you can send three or more.
4. **Respect the dice.** The attacker rolls up to three dice, the defender two, and ties go to the defender — so a small assault usually loses. Commit at least twice the defenders, expect to lose about as many soldiers as you kill without modifiers, and remember every survivor marches in, so a large column both wins and garrisons. A +1 on the top die (tank, drone, event card) roughly reverses the odds; a −1 (sabotage) does the same against you. Never leave a border province at one soldier when an enemy stack sits next to it.
5. **Place sabotage where the dice will be.** Mark the province you are about to attack so its defenders roll −1, or the province the enemy will strike from so their attack rolls −1. One mark per spy per turn, from anywhere; a second spy covers a second front.
6. **Climb the tech ladder in order.** A tank in your main attacking province first (permanent +1). Drones for the decisive assault, one per attack order. A ship only where a sea lane matters. A scientist before a plane: two borders of reach is tech now. A satellite in the capital once you have one. Rockets last, to strip a fortress's assets before the dice — three rockets feeding three attack orders is a barrage.
7. **Use the order of the turn.** Income lands before builds, so today's pay funds today's recruits; recruits can march and fight the same night; influence resolves before attacks, so a province your diplomat flips is yours before anyone fights over it. On the turn you hold the initiative, mutual assaults and contested neutrals go your way — attack then. On turns you do not lead, fortify and push influence.
8. **Spend all five orders, waste none.** A good turn is usually one or two builds, an influence push, a move and an attack or a sabotage. A duplicate politick, a second politician, scientist or hacker in a province, or a second tank buys nothing and burns a slot. A cyberattack is a two-turn plan: probe a general, then breach them on the turn their orders matter most.
9. **Capitals decide close games.** Victory points are provinces ×2, captured enemy capitals ×5 and resources ÷20, and total conquest ends the match outright. An enemy capital is worth two and a half provinces, and losing your own costs the same — keep the strongest garrison at home.
10. **Read the dispatch and the ledger every turn.** Event cards change the day's rules for everyone: a money ×0.6 day is not a day to build, an attack +1 day is a day to attack, a diplomacy day flips neutrals in one push, and a cyber day breaches a general in one cyberattack — keep a hacker standing for it. The ledger shows every fizzle with its reason, and a fizzle is a lesson about a rule you missed.

## Marco

Marco is Mappit's resident guide — a chatbot that has read everything on the map: every story, public pin, and location digest, past and present. Ask "what's happening in Lisbon?", "what happened here in March?", or "find me hiking groups near Denver". Marco reads the Daily Digest too, so "what's trending today?" gets the same brief subscribers wake up to — and he knows where every user pin is, including his own (ask "where's Marco?"). You can pin a question to a date or range — "what happened in Cairo on 7/4/2026?" — and Marco scopes its answer to that window. Marco cites its sources; click a citation to fly the map there. You can also ask Marco about **Mappit itself** — how it works, what you get, what Mappit Plus unlocks, how to plant a pin, or the rules of the games (try *"how does combat work in Conquest?"* or *"how is Bullshit scored?"*) — he's read this guide cover to cover, including how to use Mappit from Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants (try *"how do I add Mappit to Claude?"*). Marco answers from what's on the map, with citations. When the map has nothing on a question, a stronger model answers from general knowledge instead — without citations, and saying so when the question is about Mappit or something on the map.

**Marco knows his geography.** Behind Marco sits an atlas of open data: every country, every state, province and region, every county and district, and every town of 500 people or more (about 236,000 places, most of them not Mappit locations). It holds dated populations, areas, capitals, land borders with their lengths, languages, currencies, time zones, and the World Bank's economic figures for each country. Ask *"how many people live in Nampa?"*, *"what states border Texas?"*, *"what's the capital of Moldova?"*, *"which country in Africa has the highest GDP per capita?"* or *"how far is Lyon from Geneva?"*, and Marco answers from the atlas rather than from a model's memory (if a question still goes to the stronger model, the atlas's facts go with it). Marco gives each number with its year and source, for example *"(2025, US Census)"*. Populations come from the US Census for American places, otherwise from Wikidata's latest dated figure, otherwise from GeoNames, which records no year (Marco says so). A city's own population and its urban area's are different numbers, and Marco says which one he gives. A name shared by several places means the biggest of them unless you add the state or country — *"Paris, Texas"*, *"Tbilisi, Georgia"* — and Marco may mention the others; capital-letter abbreviations are US states first (*"TN"* is Tennessee). Questions about a place's news (*"why are people protesting in Georgia?"*) are still answered from the map. The sources are credited under *Data sources* at the end of this guide.

### Marco knows the statistics

Marco reads the map apps' data too: he looks figures up (*"what's Ohio's unemployment rate?"*), ranks places (*"which counties in Texas have the highest poverty?"*, *"which African countries grew fastest last year?"*), follows a trend (*"is inflation falling in Argentina?"*), describes a 2026 race (*"what do the polls say in the Georgia Senate race?"*) and past results (*"who won Pennsylvania in 2024?"*), and summarises a country's month of conflict (*"how is the war in Sudan going?"*). Every figure comes with its period and source, election answers stay neutral (counts, status and share reporting, never who is "winning"), and news measures say they are counted in Mappit's corpus. Drones, rockets and strikes in a real war are about the world, not Conquest. When a view of the map would help, Marco adds a **Show on map** button (see *Map apps*).

## Use Mappit in your AI assistant

Mappit has an **MCP server** at **https://mappit.ai/mcp**. MCP — the Model Context Protocol — is the open standard AI assistants use to reach outside tools, so once you add that address, **Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code** and any other MCP-capable assistant can read Mappit's map for you: a briefing on any city, country or the whole world, every story for a place or topic, the storylines Mappit follows with its analysis, the Daily Digest and the Week in Review, places and the publishers that cover them, 14.9 million businesses and landmarks, the live layers (earthquakes, wildfires, air quality, weather, this day in history, stocks, events, radio and TV), and the map apps' statistics (economy, people, health, conflict, elections). It's the same data as the map, ranked the same way. It's **free, needs no account and only reads** — it can't change anything on Mappit. It arrived in Mappit 2.7.0.

### Connecting your assistant to Mappit's MCP server

The address is always **https://mappit.ai/mcp**; opening it in a browser shows these steps too (the link is also in the welcome page's footer and the account menu, *Use Mappit in AI assistants*).

- **Claude (claude.ai, the desktop app, mobile):** *Settings ▸ Connectors ▸ Add custom connector*. Name it **Mappit**, paste the address, and under **Authentication** choose **No sign-in** (Claude usually detects it). Click **Add**. Claude asks your permission the first time it uses each Mappit tool.
- **ChatGPT:** on a paid plan, turn on **developer mode** (*Settings ▸ Apps & Connectors ▸ Advanced*), then create a connector with the address and no authentication.
- **Claude Code:** run `claude mcp add --transport http mappit https://mappit.ai/mcp` once. The tools appear in every session, and the starter prompts as `/mcp__mappit__briefing`, `/mcp__mappit__place_report` and `/mcp__mappit__week_in_review`.

### How Mappit's answers work in your assistant

- **Two links per story.** `source_url` is the publisher's own article; `url` opens the story's card on mappit.ai. Ask your assistant to link either.
- **Always dated.** Every answer carries `as_of`, the time it was made, so the assistant can say how fresh the news is. Time windows read the same everywhere — "24h", "72h", "7d" or "30d" — and default to the last 72 hours; search reads the whole archive unless you give it a window.
- **Places the way you say them.** "Portland, ME", "Washington State", "UK", "Sao Paulo" and "47.61,-122.33" all work. When several places share a name, the one with the most news answers and your assistant is told about the others (Portland, Oregon answers; Portland, Maine is named).
- **Honest about gaps.** A place Mappit doesn't know, an ambiguous name, a tool that's switched off or a spent allowance comes back as a short, coded message (`NOT_FOUND`, `AMBIGUOUS`, `FEATURE_OFF`, `QUOTA_EXCEEDED`…) so the assistant can correct itself or tell you.
- **Mappit's own work, attributed.** Rankings are the map's; storyline analyses and the Week in Review are Mappit's and your assistant is asked to say so. Publishers Mappit rates low-quality aren't on the map, so they aren't in the answers either.

### Limits, cost and privacy for Mappit's MCP server

- **Free, no account, read-only.** Saving pins, following places and asking Marco from an assistant will come later, with a sign-in.
- **A daily allowance, in units.** Most questions cost 1 unit; a full briefing, a business search or a county or district ranking costs 2, a search by meaning 3. Everyone using Claude on claude.ai shares one pool of 50,000 units a day (600 a minute), and everyone using ChatGPT another; an assistant connecting from your own computer — Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code — gets 1,000 units a day (60 a minute). Allowances reset at midnight UTC; a spent one answers `QUOTA_EXCEEDED` with the reset time.
- **What Mappit sees.** Only what your assistant sends Mappit's tools — the tool and its inputs, such as the place you asked about — plus the assistant's name and version and the network address the request came from (for an assistant running in the cloud, its provider's address, not yours). Never your conversation, your other prompts or your files.
- **What Mappit keeps.** A log of each call — the tool, when, how long it took, whether it worked, the place or search it was about, the assistant's name and a one-way hash of the address — deleted after 90 days, used to keep the allowance fair and to fix problems. Like any visit to mappit.ai, calls also pass through Mappit's security logs. The Privacy Policy's *AI Assistants (MCP)* section has the full text.

### Troubleshooting Mappit in your assistant

- **Claude asks how to sign in.** In *Add custom connector*, set Authentication to **No sign-in** — Mappit has no sign-in yet.
- **The assistant answers without Mappit.** Start a new chat after adding the connector, make sure the connector is switched on for the chat, or ask it outright: *"use Mappit"*.
- **"NOT_FOUND" or "AMBIGUOUS" for a place.** Add the state or country ("Springfield, Illinois") or give coordinates ("39.80,-89.64").
- **"QUOTA_EXCEEDED".** The day's allowance is spent; it resets at midnight UTC.
- **ChatGPT won't let you add it.** Custom connectors need developer mode, which needs a paid ChatGPT plan.
- **Is this the same as Marco?** No. Marco is Mappit's own chatbot on mappit.ai; the MCP server lets *other* assistants read Mappit's map. Both draw on the same stories, places and storylines.
- **An answer looks old.** Check `as_of` and the story's date; ask for a shorter window (*"in the last 24 hours"*).

### For developers: Mappit's MCP endpoint

- **Transport:** Streamable HTTP at `https://mappit.ai/mcp`, stateless — every POST stands alone, no session id. Protocol revision 2026-07-28; clients on 2025-11-25 negotiate down. POST JSON-RPC with `Accept: application/json, text/event-stream`; each reply arrives as a single server-sent event on the same response. A GET that asks for an event stream answers 405.
- **Discovery:** `initialize` returns the server's name (`mappit`), title, version (Mappit's release) and short instructions; `tools/list` returns the fourteen tools with titles and read-only annotations; `prompts/list` the three starters. The registry name is `ai.mappit/mappit`.
- **A call:**

- **Allowances** apply per platform (claude.ai's address range) or per address, as above. Mappit's administrators see usage in *Admin ▸ MCP*.

Every public pin and location has a post thread rendered in the carousel below the map. Posts support markdown, @-mentions, image and media attachments, and nested replies. The fastest way in: hit **Post here** on any location's panel (or **Post** in its map popover) and the composer opens with that place already targeted.

### Your public profile

Your profile page at `/u/yourname` is built to be shared. Customize it from Profile ▸ **Public profile**: upload a profile picture and a wide **cover image** (with a position slider to frame it right), add links to your website, X/Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and LinkedIn, and choose whether your full name, company, and country appear. Visitors see your bio, your public pins and collections, and your recent posts — and while they browse, your public pins surface on their map.

### Forums, messages, workgroups

The Forums section hosts long-form Q&A. Private messages work like email with attachments — on desktop you can reach them straight from the **mail icon in the top bar** (it shows an unread count) or from **Messages** in the left nav, as well as from the account menu. Workgroups are private circles — share pins, collections, and overlays to a workgroup and only members see them.

### Moderation

Use the Report button on any content that breaks the rules. Moderators review reports; thread owners can hide replies on their own pins.

### The crawler (Marco) — curators

Most stories reach the map through **Marco the crawler**, Mappit's own reader — no search fees, and the AI vendors no longer search place by place. Around the clock, paced to a daily story budget so the crawl spreads across the day, it visits the front pages of the publishers already in the corpus — tiered like locations, so the biggest contributors are read every run, mid-sized ones every eight hours, smaller ones every sixteen, the long tail monthly — follows their links a few levels down, and reads each article's own markup. A page becomes a story only if it passes the **quality gate**: a real title and link, a publication date no older than a few days, a description, a share image that actually loads, and a place — read from the article's geo tags or dateline, from a major city named in the headline, or from the publisher's own **affinity location** (the Toronto Sun is Toronto unless the article says otherwise — but never for a wire copy: an AP or Reuters story carried on a local station's site places itself or is not kept) — and a **category** the classifier assigns with confidence (the same call reads the story's mood for its sentiment dot): a story that cannot be placed in the ontology with confidence is rejected as *no-category* rather than kept. Since 2.7.0 the same call also checks the place whenever the crawler could only guess it — from the publisher's home or from a city the headline mentions. Asked where the story happened, without being shown the guess, the model's answer moves the story there (a Kyiv market strike that a mention of Moscow had filed under Moscow now sits in Kyiv), keeps it where it was when the answer agrees or lies nearby, and rejects it as *judge-no-place* when the story happened nowhere in particular — celebrity news, recipes, lists. Anything that fails is listed with the rule that caught it. Crawled stories carry Marco's compass instead of a vendor logo and corroborate with the vendors' finds exactly as two vendors corroborate each other. Because a full lap over thousands of publishers takes most of a day, two lanes run beside it. The **headline lane**: every half hour Marco re-reads the front pages of the eighty publishers that gave the map the most news last week and follows only what is new there, so the big sites stay fresh while the long tail is still being walked. The **location lane**: every hour it finds the places short of their day's news (a major city wants twenty crawled stories a day, a small town one) and reads those places' own publishers, the neediest first. **Source quality**: every publisher carries a rating — *preferred* (the major US and UK wires, networks and papers of record: AP, Reuters, the BBC, CBS, NBC and their peers), *reliable*, *unrated*, *unreliable* or *deprecated*, from Wikipedia's perennial-sources consensus — and the crawler reads the reliable ones more often and more deeply, while the story strips lean toward them. Since 2.7.0 quality is a gate as well as a weight: stories from publishers rated *unreliable* or *deprecated*, or avoided by a curator, are refused from every source (they show in Rejects as *low-quality*), unless a curator rates the publisher *reliable* or better — the wires on the avoid list are there for their bot walls, not their reporting. A publisher the crawler set aside on its own (no usable story in five runs) is not refused: that says the crawler can't read its pages, not that its reporting is poor. (A few of them, AP and Reuters among them, close their sites to crawlers; their stories still reach the map when the AI models find them.) The crawl is paced: a daily story budget spreads it across the day instead of letting it finish by noon, and the Crawler page shows today's count against the budget. One wire is one story: when the same syndicated article appears on many publishers' sites, the first copy stands and the rest are refused (they show in Rejects as *syndicated*), and administrators can fold the copies written before that rule existed from Admin ▸ Crawler.

Curators and administrators get a **Crawler** page in the left nav: a status strip with **Start now / Pause / Resume / Stop**, and tabs for the crawled **Stories** (ordinary story cards), the live **Queue** (the pages waiting to be read this run), **History** (every page visited and what became of it), **Rejects** (what failed the gate and why), and **Domains** — the publisher roster, where you can set a publisher's home (type a place; the one of that exact name comes first), change its tier, disable it, or put it on the **avoid list** so it is never crawled (publishers that keep yielding nothing are avoided automatically after a few empty runs). Administrators also get **Purge** beside Avoid: it removes every story the publisher ever put on the map and keeps it out for good, on the story blacklist as well as the avoid list. For the whole roster at once, Admin ▸ Crawler ▸ *Low-quality publishers* counts the stored stories of every unreliable and deprecated publisher and every publisher a curator avoided, shows the biggest, and removes the kinds you tick (a story someone's post cites is hidden instead). Administrators can also have the judge **re-check places**: the crawled stories of the last two weeks that were placed by their publisher's home or a city in the headline are asked again where they happened, moved when the judge names somewhere else, and listed for review when it names nowhere. The same verdicts check each publisher's home: Admin ▸ Crawler ▸ *Publisher homes* lists the publishers whose stories keep happening somewhere else and what a pass would do — move the home to the place that holds half of them, clear it when most happened nowhere in particular, or leave it to you (**Make home**, **Clear** or **Keep**). **Apply** makes those changes, each can be undone on its own or with its whole pass, and *Every 6 hours* runs the pass by itself. A home you set or keep yourself is never changed by a pass. *Rebuild from corpus* refreshes the roster and tiers from the story archive. The roster also grows on its own: **Marco's scout** visits every place on the map in turn (a few hundred an hour, each once a month), asks Bing News who covers it, and puts those publishers on the roster with the place as their home — so a town of a thousand people gets its local paper and the two regional TV stations read without a vendor search, and their stories land on the town when the article names no place of its own. For the places the scout can't staff, a **discovery pass** asks an AI model once which newsrooms cover the place, then reads each suggested front page and keeps only the ones that really list their own stories (Admin ▸ Utilities ▸ *Local publishers* shows its progress). Obituary and listing sites are kept out; a publisher already in the archive is judged by where its stories land (half or more within 150 km and it is the place's, however many there are); a home the scout gave moves to a bigger place nearby (a city outlet first seen for a suburb ends up on the city) and is given up once the publisher turns up for a third place beyond 150 km — a city outlet covering its suburbs is still the city's. Each publisher's front page also teaches the roster its language, and the crawler plans the readers' languages first (`Crawler.PreferredLanguages`) — a publisher in another language keeps its place at half weight, so the page budget follows the readers without shutting the world out; a crawled story carries the language its page declares, so *Your language* on the Newsfeed hides it or shows it correctly. Moderators and above also get a **Crawled** tab on the map's trending strip (desktop only) showing the newest crawled stories, and administrators see the crawled-versus-model ratio, run history (with each run's classification cost), the scout's progress (places visited, places with a press corps, publishers with a home), reject reasons and crawler logs under Admin ▸ Crawler — plus a **Crawled-story hygiene** utility that back-fills categories, moods and publication names for stories crawled before those rules existed, purging what the classifier will not vouch for.

## On your phone

Mappit adapts to phones with a map-first layout: a slim top bar, a slide-out drawer for navigation, in-place search, a full-bleed map with one compact filter bar (Map/Events, topic, dates), the story strip behind a film-strip toggle, and the location panel plus its conversation unified into a single bottom sheet you can swipe. The map controls — Directions, Plant pin, Layers, and the zoom and draw tools — are stacked at the **bottom-left**, clear of the trending strip; the Marco button sits at the bottom-right — **hold it for a moment and drag** to park it anywhere you like (a plain tap opens the chat; the spot is remembered) — with the map-style, globe, 3D-terrain and share buttons stacked above it on the **bottom-right**. Two-finger drag tilts the map when 3D terrain is on. Open a pin and you get a bottom sheet — **drag the grab-handle down to dismiss it**, or tap the ✕.

**Creating on mobile.** Planting a pin and writing a post both work on a phone. Tap **Plant pin** and then the map (or use Pins ▸ New), and a full-height composer slides up from the bottom — drag the handle down to dismiss. It covers everything you need: kind and category, title, a markdown body with an Edit/Preview toggle, coordinates, **photos straight from your camera or gallery**, audio/video links, the extra place details (address, contact, services, fees, website), event fields, and a Private/Public/Workgroup visibility switch. Posts get the same sheet with a pin/location target picker.

**What's different from the desktop editor.** The mobile composer is deliberately streamlined:

- Photos are added from your **camera or photo library** rather than pasted or entered as URLs — there's no clipboard-paste or image-URL field on mobile.
- A pin's single legacy "cover image" (set on desktop) is kept when you edit on mobile but isn't editable there; the swipeable **photo gallery** is the way you add images on a phone.
- Everything else — visibility, publishing, event details, media embeds, drafts saved only on Save — behaves exactly like desktop.

For the fullest editing experience (paste-a-screenshot, image-by-URL, side-by-side fields) use Mappit on a laptop or desktop; for capturing a place in the moment, the phone composer is built for it.

## Billing

Three plans, all handled by Stripe: **Mappit Plus** ($2/month or $20/year — 10 pins/day, 20 location feeds), **Mappit Pro** ($5/month or $50/year — 40 pins/day, 50 feeds), and **Mappit Max** ($10/month or $100/year — 100 pins/day, 100 feeds, built for tracking daily routes, geopolitical events, disasters, and conflict zones). Subscriptions are billed by Correlation Studio LLC; every payment emails you a numbered invoice with a PDF copy, and your invoices are always available under Profile ▸ Subscription. Manage or cancel anytime; access runs to the end of the paid period.

**If your subscription lapses, your pins are never deleted.** Your ten most recent pins stay live; older pins are shelved out of view and come back exactly where they were the moment you resubscribe.
