Mappit.ai — frontier geo-intelligence. Every place has a story.

The world's zeitgeist on a map. Mappit turns the world's news into a living, interactive map. An always-on news engine continuously reads what is happening in nearly two thousand places — its own crawler, which reads the world's publishers directly and supplies more than nine in ten new stories, working alongside frontier AI from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI in the jobs a crawler cannot do — and pins each story to the place it is about, on an interactive, time-aware map of the planet. Zoom into any city and you see what's happening there right now — grouped by topic, colored by mood, drawn only from publishers that clear a reliability bar and weighted toward the most trusted, marked with how many independent sources found it, and with every source link checked so the stories you read actually lead somewhere real. Scrub the calendar backwards and the map replays how the world looked on any past day, because each day's record is kept rather than replaced.

On top of that news layer, Mappit adds live views of the physical planet — earthquakes, wildfires, air quality, and weather — and a market layer that plots stock movements at companies' real headquarters. A built-in AI guide named Marco answers questions about any place and cites its sources — the news there and, from an atlas of open data, its population, borders and statistics, each figure with its year and source. And Mappit is frontier geo-intelligence: eight Layer Apps put the official numbers beside the news, coloring the world's countries and America's states, counties and congressional districts by the economy, population, energy, health, conflict and the 2026 US elections, drawing every nuclear reactor and data center, playing it all back through time, and writing an AI analysis of any view on request. Anyone can browse for free; a subscription unlocks the ability to create and share your own places, collections, and data layers. And AI assistants can read Mappit directly: add https://mappit.ai/mcp to Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant, free and without an account.

The core idea is simple and durable: place + time is the most natural way to organize what is happening in the world, and the value compounds every day as the record grows. The map is the interface; the permanent, corroborated, geolocated corpus of world events beneath it is the substance.

Mappit requires JavaScript for the interactive map. Every public place, pin, collection and profile also has a crawlable page — see the sitemap.

Banjarmasin

Geography & Setting

Banjarmasin sprawls across a low-lying delta where the Barito and Martapura rivers braid together before reaching the Java Sea, earning it the nickname "City of a Thousand Rivers." Much of the city sits below sea level, laced with canals and tributaries that have historically served as its real streets. Wooden stilt houses still line many waterways, and the famous floating markets of Lok Baintan and Kuin remain places where boats, not stalls, do the selling — vendors paddling jukung canoes stacked with fruit, vegetables, and fish at dawn.

History

Banjarmasin traces its founding to the 16th century as the seat of the Banjar Sultanate, a Malay Islamic kingdom that grew wealthy on pepper and river trade linking the interior of Kalimantan to Java, the Malay Peninsula, and beyond. Dutch colonial interests moved in during the 17th and 19th centuries, provoking the prolonged Banjarmasin War (1859–1906) as sultanate loyalists resisted annexation. That river-trade DNA — goods moving by water rather than road — still shapes the city's layout and rhythm today.

People & Demographics

The population is predominantly ethnic Banjar, a Muslim Malay group with its own language and strong maritime and trading traditions, alongside Javanese, Bugis, Dayak, and Chinese-Indonesian communities. Islam shapes daily and civic life, visible in the call to prayer echoing over the river and in landmarks like the Sabilal Muhtadin Grand Mosque.

Economy & Markets

Historically a pepper and rubber entrepôt, the modern economy leans on river and coastal shipping, timber, rattan, coal (South Kalimantan is a major Indonesian coal-producing region), fisheries, and agriculture from the surrounding delta. The floating markets persist more as cultural touchstone and tourist draw than as the dominant commercial engine, but they still capture how deeply water underwrites livelihoods here.

Culture & Character

Banjarmasin moves at river pace: dawn market runs, ferries as commuter transport, and a cuisine built around fish, coconut, and the tart-sour flavors typical of Banjar cooking (soto banjar being the signature dish). Traditional wooden architecture, Islamic scholarship traditions, and a strong sense of Banjar identity — distinct from Java's cultural gravity — give the city a self-contained, riverine character rarely found in Indonesia's more land-bound cities.

Current Currents

The city's fate as a maritime hub cuts both ways today: search-and-rescue teams are combing the Java Sea after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8, en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, sank in stormy weather. It's a grim reminder that the same sea lanes which built Banjarmasin's wealth and connected it to the wider archipelago remain unpredictable and, at times, perilous for those who depend on them.
