Dandong
Liaoning Province, China — 40.1238, 124.3822
Geography & Setting
Dandong sits at the mouth of the Yalu River, right on the border with North Korea, where the river widens toward Korea Bay and the Yellow Sea. Across the water — sometimes just a few hundred meters — lies the North Korean city of Sinuiju. Hills and the Changbai range foothills crowd the city from the north, funneling it into a narrow riverside footprint that has long made it China's most important land gateway to the Korean Peninsula.
History
Dandong's fortunes have always tracked its position on the frontier. It rose as a trading and garrison town under various Chinese dynasties, then became a treaty-adjacent port as Japan and Russia jostled over Manchuria in the early 20th century. During the Korean War, the city (then called Andong) was the principal staging point for Chinese "Volunteer Army" troops crossing into Korea, and the bombed-out Yalu River Bridge — still standing, severed mid-river — remains the city's most visited relic of that era. The name changed to Dandong ("Red East") in 1965.
People & Demographics
Dandong is a mid-sized prefecture-level city, ethnically mixed by regional standards, with a notable Korean-Chinese (Chaoxianzu) population alongside the Han majority, reflecting centuries of cross-border movement. As a Mappit tier-4 location, it functions as a solidly local hub rather than a provincial or national one — well known within its own region, less so beyond it.
Economy & Markets
Trade with North Korea is the defining economic thread — Dandong handles a large share of China–DPRK cross-border commerce, from consumer goods and machinery heading in to minerals and seafood coming out, though volumes rise and fall sharply with sanctions enforcement and political weather. Beyond that, the city has a modest industrial base (textiles, chemicals, papermaking) and a fishing and port economy tied to the Yellow Sea.
Culture & Character
Dandong has a border-town texture: tour groups peer across the river through binoculars at Sinuiju, riverside restaurants serve Korean-influenced dishes, and a low hum of speculation about the DPRK runs through daily life. It's simultaneously a quiet, mid-tier Chinese city with parks and riverside promenades and a place perpetually cast, fairly or not, as a bellwether for what's happening behind the closed border a stone's throw away.
