Mappit's analysis
Geography & Setting
Long Beach sits on the southern edge of Los Angeles County, about 25 miles south of downtown LA, where the flat San Pedro Bay shoreline meets the mouth of the Los Angeles River. Much of the city is low and level, built on sand, marsh and reclaimed land. A long breakwater shelters its harbor and calms the surf, so the beaches are gentle compared with the open Pacific coast. The city has distinct districts: the downtown waterfront, the canal-laced island of Naples, the Belmont Shore strip, the narrow Peninsula, and a large working port.
History
The land belonged to the Tongva, then to Spanish and Mexican ranchos, and Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos still survive as historic sites. Seaside resort development took off in the late 1800s, and the city incorporated in 1897. The Pike amusement zone drew crowds for decades. Oil discovered at nearby Signal Hill in 1921 fueled a boom, and the 1933 earthquake forced a major rebuild. The Navy and aircraft manufacturing shaped the mid-century city. The Queen Mary arrived as a permanent attraction in 1967, and the naval shipyard closed in 1997.
People & Demographics
With about 450,000 residents, Long Beach is one of California's largest cities and among the most diverse. Latino, white, Black and Asian communities each make up a substantial share. The Cambodian community is among the largest outside Cambodia, centered on "Cambodia Town" along Anaheim Street. A big student population comes with California State University, Long Beach, and Long Beach City College.
Economy & Markets
The Port of Long Beach is the anchor. It is one of the busiest container ports in the Western Hemisphere and, with neighboring Los Angeles, handles a large share of U.S. trade with Asia. Aerospace, health care, education, tourism and the airport (a JetBlue hub) round out the economy. Boeing's long-running C-17 plant closed in 2015, but the city is still tied to aerospace and logistics. Downtown, the convention center and waterfront draw visitors year-round.
Culture & Character
Long Beach has big-city scale with a beach-town attitude. The city is known for:
- Music: hip-hop, with Snoop Dogg the best-known name, and the ska-punk of Sublime.
- Waterfront draws: the Aquarium of the Pacific, the Queen Mary, and the canal-ringed gondola rides in Naples.
- Neighborhood strips: Retro Row on Fourth Street and the cafés and bars of Belmont Shore.
- Racing: the Grand Prix, run on downtown streets since 1975.
- Olympics: a role in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
